In keeping with the summer vacation theme and to comfort those poor souls who blink palely under fluorescent office lights unable to escape, we've invited guest newsletter reader, Alicia de Villa, to report on her fashion findings and Mediterranean musings live from Istanbul, Turkey. If you are headed somewhere exotic this summer let us know if you would like to be considered to guest Friday For Play. In the meantime, enjoy Alicia's Turkish Delight.

MERHABA (HELLO) FROM ISTANBUL
It is 85 degrees and breezy where I am up in the hills of Tarabya. Today, we strolled along the chic streets of Nisantasi after a languorous lunch at Kantin, a trendy cafe with French flair. Major European fashion houses rule the Turkish styleset. Gucci, YSL, Cavalli, LV and Hermes are highly visible among the perambulating class. We spotted sunkissed faces in high heels. The women have clearly mastered walking on cobblestone streets in their 3-inch Manolos.
Ortakoy, another cool neighborhood with a marina to boot, along the Bosphorus bank is teeming with designer wear clad ladies who lunch on mezes and fresh catch of the day. Restaurant and clubs like Dada, Angelique, Laila and Reina all draw young hipsters on weekends whose party habits are like the rest of Europe, rockin' until 4 am and beyond. Tonight, we hit Crystal, clearly the favorite among the creme de la creme of Istanbul society where top DJ's are keen on spinning progressive house music. And when it's time to pass the buka, everyone waves their hands in the air for some belly dancing a la Harem, the top percussionist band in the land. Unfortunately, I'm missing the whole scene on the other shore by not crossing the Bosphorus on this trip but I suppose that gives me good reason to return...

THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS MADGE
MADONNA has told her friends to call her by her new religious name: Esther. You see, Madge--sorry, Esther--is a devoted follower of Kabbalah, a mystical offshoot of Judaism. And recently put her money where her mouth is by donating millions of pounds to provide a London HQ for its followers (because as you may recall, Esther is also English).
Mad Esther and a growing number of other lost souls in Hollywood like Demi Moore (note: soul + Hollywood=oxymoron) are studying Kabbalah with the same frenzy they put towards their search for subtle facelifts and the latest body perfecting exercises. In fact it's rumored that Mad Esther refuses to drink anything other than Kabbalah water, which makes sense because she obviously needs something to wash down the CRAZY pills she must be taking!
