Splendora Newsletter, March 19 2004
|
Sorry the newsletter is so late today. We're back in uncharacteristically sunny San Francisco where mist on tans are a must-have and tank tops are in full force. Spring Fever is in the air like an allergy ready to afflict the faint of heart so break out those rose colored glasses, slather on the SPF, and protect yourself from those harmful rays (or whatever his/her name is). Congrats to Elizabeth Bastiaanse the lucky winner of Mercedes Night on the Town Sweepstakes. One thing for sure, 2004 is going to be a year to remember.

GINA PELL'S NY STORIES CONCLUDED ...
I didn't detect WiFi (or WeeFee as the French say) at JFK in New York so I couldn't finish last week's entry, which is ironic since I have an airport installed in my computer but couldn't get a connection at the airport. But to give a recap on our New York trip ... it was freezing and fabulous. Despite the cold, Amy and I threw frostbite to the wind and donned the stunning Louboutin shoes I brought back from Paris. After being bundled up like characters out of Dr. Zhivago it was nice to slink it up at the Biltmore Room over slices of duck breast and a very decadent bottle of Nuits St. Georges. Most hilarious moment of the trip? The unexpected reaction we got when people noticed the major blingage of our Splendora Superbowl Rings. It didn't occur to us that it's unusual for grown women to wear matching (giant) diamond rings on the ring fingers of our left hands. Add to that the fact that we're also from San Francisco and you get many funny looks (nice, sweet funny looks though). For a week in New York, Amy and I were mistaken as a married couple which was fine by us. I even got a few "way to go" winks from strangers. And for those of you gals who have written in to ask if it's okay to get the exact same ring the answer is a resounding YES! We love and encourage the adoarable fifth grade habit of buying the same everything. So call your best friend and tell her there's something else you have to buy.
Highlights of the trip? Tory Burch. Remember that name because just as we're going to be right about actor Peter Sarsgaard's (can we say obsessed?) inevitable rise to fame, Tory's new line of clothing in her jet set chic boutique in NoLita will also reach stellar heights. Only seconds after begging Amy to hide my wallet (we were just leaving Jamin Puech, refer to kilt handbag above), I was mesmerized by two tall orange lacquered doors with lucite handles. Was it a spa? Was it a restaurant? Was it a daytime nightclub? I had to find out. And one sweater, one tunic, and one metal belt later I fell in love with a boutique that looks like the worldly pied a terre of a very well-travelled aristobohemian aunt circa 1972 and a clothing line that could be the long lost, now mature love child of Hermes and Pucci.
Other things noteworthy, particularly if you plan to be in New York soon: the restaurant Public in Soho for gorgeous people watching. Cafe Habane in NoLita, which has the best cuban sandwich ever, and the new Diane Von Furstenberg boutique on W. 12th. There are dozens more places worth visiting but you'll just have to check out Splendora New York.

SPLENDORA HALL OF FAME
Meet Traci Jenkins, the first inductee of the Splendora Hall of Fame (or S-HoF as we call it at HQ). What is SHoF you ask? Well, it is a special place in our hearts and soon our website reserved for those Splendoritas who will go to the ends of the earth (or Queens as in Traci's case) to track down a Splendora Recommendation. Here's her letter to the editor:
"I look forward to Friday ForPlay every week. My friend, Tony and I go shopping together a lot on what we call missions for clothes of all price ranges. He calls me a "flirty skirty" girl because if it's short with a little bounce-- I have to have it. So when I saw the $17 ballet skirt in Splendora's Weekend Forecast, I knew I had to make it mine. Splendora set up the challenge by not revealing the label or having a link to purchase. When I called the San Fran office I found I was not the only one eyeing this fashion candy. Forever21? I had never heard of it - no worries, I'll do Internet shopping. Forever21 took it off the website that morning? No problem, I'll call them and arrange a charge send but I'm told there are no stores in Manhattan - where I live - but only in the outer boroughs I see on the way to the airport. They call them Queens and Brooklyn and what? Staten Island? That's like Europe to a girl from Uptown. After about 30 minutes on hold with customer service I finally got my sku number and was directed to the store in Queens where I went the next day by train (a cab would not have made it an adventure). The trek paid off - I got two - pink and black. mission complete. I even went to visit my niece whom I adore, but hardly ever see because I simply refuse to go to Queens.
Thanks for inspiring me to make the trek to find these skirts and see my sweet niece!"
