What to Listen: "The Wackness" Soundtrack

Found: A hip indie flick in a summer of super cool blockbusters. "The Wackness" opening on July 3rd looks to be the nostalgic relief away from all the movie star shine. It follows a young New Yorker in the summer of 1994, and to help tell his story, the film makers put together an amazing soundtrack. Most of the songs by great hip-hop artists come straight out of 94': "The World is Yours" by Nas, "Flava in Your Ear"by Craig Mack. But slightly older classic summer songs: "Just a Friend" by Biz Markie, and "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, are also included. The movie and the soundtrack are perfect to add to my warm weather and slushie (Cherry Limeade, yum) combo, definitey not wack.

What to Listen: Motley Crue's New Album?

The craziest thing about Motley Crue’s new album (which dropped last Tuesday) is that all the members are still alive. From the looks of it, not for long. We might need an on-site ambulance to “Kickstart their heart” because they are looking dangerously old. These senior-citizen rock n' rollers have re-hashed their eighties lifestyle of fury and filth with songs about snorting powder, boozing and “Girls, Girls, Girls". Saints Of Los Angeles is staying true to the Motley Crew sound. If you are a part of their legion of fans you will love this album. However, I don’t recommend seeing these guys live in concert, they might not be as spunky as they were in the good old days.

What to Listen: My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges

While I love My Morning Jacket, their last album didn't really leave me screaming for more. Regardless, they've remained one of my favorite live acts and I've been anxiously awaiting their newest album, Evil Urges. I purchased it the day of release and it's fantastic! The range is a little all over the place, but in a good way. The sound is less studio heavy and more reminiscent of their great live sound. My suggestion: buy this new album, and then tickets to a live show.

What to Listen: Martha Wainwright, "I Know You're Married, but I Have Feelings Too"

When dealing with matters of the heart, some people go to therapy. Others make an album. And lucky for us, Martha Wainwright chose the latter.  Her second album, "I Know You're Married But I Have Feelings Too," is chock full of heartbreak and unrequitted love. And man, is she pissed off. Martha does "angst" really well, and she doesn't disappoint as she brings on the pain, anger, and wry wit to produce a result that's actually quite lovely. Though I think she needs a heavy-duty dose of Lithium, Martha's got mad skills. Give this a listen. Her voice--and lyrics--will haunt you long after you've shut off your iPod.

What to Listen: Weezer's Red Album

From the geek-chic rockers who brought you great tunes such as Beverly Hills, The Sweater Song, and Hash Pipe, comes their latest album, self titled Weezer (the Red Album). I'm in love with their catchy, Beach Boys-meets-Beastie Boys sound and cerebral tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Check out my fav tracks, Pork and Beans, Dreamin', and The Greatest Man That Ever Lived. You should also consider getting the delux edition of the album which features 5 great bonus tracks (like another of my faves, It's Easy). Throw on your horn-rimmed specs and headphones. It's time to rock out, man.
