Variety is the spice of life at this downtown spot which is alternately a supper club, cabaret, bar, and site of late-night happenings. Though it bears the name of The Public Theater founder Joe Papp, there's nothing laissez-faire about its entrance policy. If getting behind the velvet rope is akin to playing Russian roulette, then guessing the line-up of performers is just as difficult. Past shows have featured Broadway diva Audra McDonald, indie rocker couple Michael Penn and Aimee Mann, and Argentine Tango dancers. After eating the standard bistro fare and watching your favorite artist perform, it's time to take it up a notch. Once the late-night DJs start-up, the celeb-laden crowd hobnobs and gyrates in the dark, two-tiered space highlighted by the illuminated black and white striped bar.
