Ever heard of waiting in line to get into a hotel bar on a Thursday night? Welcome to Whisky Blue, Rande Gerber's outpost of downtown cool in midtown's W Hotel. An older crowd of bankers and a swarm of uptown hipsters pack it in and celebrate the bull market under the bar's dark, bluish lights. The large leather chairs, perhaps stolen from a bankrupt brokerage, reward those lucky enough to get a seat. And though colored glass bottles are illuminated behind the bar, not much shines besides the patrons' blind ambition. Thankfully, if the atmosphere is too much, escape is just through the door to the W's airy, plant-motif lounge.
