Oh, Caffe Macaroni. Everyone loves it, it's Francis Ford Coppola's favorite restaurant, and it's in all the guides as the best Italian restaurant in town. Well, we think of Caffe Macaroni as more of a rustic, foodie caffe than a great restaurant. If you sit upstairs (away from the noisy kitchen) and order the right thing, it's a grand place to hide out, quaff Chianti, and slurp lamp shank with polenta in an idyllic village haunt. Otherwise, you might end up sucking on bland pasta in a deafening din of waiters' chatter on the first floor, stiff-backed or a banqueted and chilly from the drafty front door. On a rare warm night, the sidewalk tables are great for espresso and a sweet, creamy panna cotta.
