"They don't make 'em like they used to" can be muttered about many things these days - movies, dishwashers, stereos, cars - but certainly not the gorgeous tableware produced by Heath Ceramics. Heath most certainly does make things like they used to, but with a stylish and modern twist. For over 50 years, this Sausalito-based company, a one-woman operation until luxury retailer Gump's discovered Edith Heath's ceramics in 1948, has been churning out handcrafted, hand-glazed tableware of the highest quality. Each and every platter, mug, bowl and vase is made by hand in their Marin County factory, one of the few remaining American mid-century potteries. When we say these pieces are museum-quality, we mean it: some of Heath's early designs have found their way into New York MoMA's permanent collection, including a teapot that remains a Heath fan-favorite. Their contemporary home line has a chic edge; the colorful and eclectic collection allows you to mix-and-match pieces easily, so you can switch out your table settings depending on your aesthetic and your mood. What's more, unlike other hoity-toity lines, Heath Ceramic pieces are totally dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe. Splendora girls are particularly crazy about the "Plaza" collection, which includes clean-lined square designs ideal for serving tapas and impressing your dinner guests. If you live nearby, head over to the factory store where dinnerware seconds are sold at a 30% discount. Also be sure to peruse Heath's modern stoneware tile collection, wonderful for adding a stylish touch to your home's walls, floors, and more. Whether you take a trip to the store or shop online, one thing's for sure - Heath Ceramics' modern tableware will last a lot longer than that DVD player you just bought, and will never go out of style.
