What constitutes a romantic meal? An oyster starter and chocolate fondue dessert? A barely lit dining room where you have to squint to make out your significant other? We think not. Skip the hackeneyed dishes found at trend-centric restaurants in favor of the inspired menu options and elegant surroundings of The General's Daughter. Located in an expansive Victorian home by Sonoma Square, the exquisite, simply decorated space sets the stage for cooking that feels familiar, but has a decidedly innovative edge. We sampled the four course menu, which features flexible mix-and-match options (you can order four starters, for example, if you so choose) and ample, unpretentious portions. Our culinary adventure included a metaphorical dip in the sea: tender softshell crab and lobster gnocchi were paired with various complimentary local wines to satisfy the palate. A combination plate of Artisinal and Farmstead Sonoma cheeses was a delectable way to end the meal. The cuisine may be classified as California low-country cooking, but don't let the connotations of that title fool you - Chef Preston Dishman's technical precision and clean flavors far surpass any five star rating system. Romance involves pleasure and gratification, and we experienced both at their highest degree at our memorable dinner.
