The Heritage House
Majestic, rustic, eclectic, heavenly - these are adjectives that are used to describe Mendocino. Moreover, there is a property right outside of Mendo that fits this description to a tee, The Heritage House. The hotel has a tangible aura. We can picture a 70s film drenched in sunlight and dabbled with drama taking place there. Funny thing, there was a film, "Same Time Next Year," that was filmed on the property in 1978. All of the rooms at the Heritage House have an ocean view, some with more expansive views of the bluffs. Our seagrass carpeted room had a rustic appeal but came with all of the bells and whistles that a modern suite should have - a rain shower, plasma TV, suped-up mini-bar (which by the way, is complimentary for guests!) and perhaps our favorite part, a deck overlooking the ocean. We sat outside in our Adirondack chairs staring at the sea with a pair of binoculars (provided by the hotel, natch). Speaking of, the staff at the hotel caters specifically to you. Whether you prefer the NY Times to the SF Chronicle, Fiji Water to Evian, 1% to skim, they provide accordingly. The food at the Heritage House pays homage to the northern coast as does their wine selection. We took our 7-course tasting menu in the quiet, dimly lit dining room that overlooks the expanse of the ocean. Even though dinner was quite romantic, the elegant country breakfast is equally lovely. The naturally sculpted 37-acre property has exquisite gardens that are maintained by no less than 10 full-time staffers which makes for some heady visuals. Our memories are vivid - when we close our eyes we can still picture the pure beauty. The Heritage House and Mendocino are best enjoyed with someone you love.
