Holocaust survivor, Joseph Pell, is my beloved father-in-law and personal hero. Papa Joe is the subject of two books. The first is called Taking Risks, a biography about his experience as the only surviving member of his family who fought alongside the Partisans, and now the second book, Becoming Americans: Four Centuries of Immigrant Writing by Ilan Stevens includes an excerpt of his remarkable story along with other notable immigrants like Vladimir Nabokov, Frank McCourt, and Jhumpa Lahiri.
