Darlings,
This weekend, if you are bored while waiting in line to check-out at the grocery store, make sure to flip through this week's issue of Life & Style magazine with "Depressed Angie Refuses to Eat!" on the cover. On page 64, Splendora EIC, Karen B., expresses her strong opinions on the "shorts suit" look that many celebs like J.Lo and Sarah Michelle Gellar have recently rocked.

You tell us What's What
"Hairspray": 1988 v. 2007
We hold a special place in our hearts for dear, "pleasantly plump" Tracy Turnblad, the perfectly coiffed heroine of "Hairspray." But it's Ricki Lake's turn as Turnblad in John Waters' '80s cult classic that we adore, having yet to view the 2007 film. There's a lot to look forward to in Adam Shankman's updated version, including the return of Michelle Pfeiffer to the big screen, costumes that are even more ostentatious and fiercely styled than the original, and Splendora teen queen favorite Amanda Bynes, whose pigtails and excessive lollipop consumption are just adorable. Then, there's John Travolta in drag - 'nuff said. We're reserving judgment until sitting through the flashy new musical numbers, but we also have a sneaking suspicion that nothing can top the '88 original. The filmmakers can't possibly expect to duplicate the magic of Lake, Debbie Harry, and Jerry Stiller, or deliver the same comedic punch that only Waters' acerbic writing delivers. Plus, 2007's "Hairspray" boasts...John Travolta in drag. It deserves a second mention, because no image has scared us more in recent history. Shudder.

Cuckoo For Couture
While the media turns a focused eye to New York, Milan, Paris, and London each spring and fall during Fashion Week, couture collections fail to receive the same degree of rapt attention. Standard recaps are posted on the websites of our favorite fashion magazines, but the public appears significantly less interested in the theatrical creations parading down Parisian runways. "Not wearable," they say, or, "Strictly for show." As Splendora has cultivated a heightened appreciation for art this year - our head honcho is presently in Venice taking in the Biennale, in fact - we invite you to do the same. Examine each meticulously constructed ruffle at Dior's 60th anniversary show, which featured homages to the house's long history, fashion photographer Irving Penn, and the drawings of esteemed artists. Armani Prive took off in a radically different direction, with fluorescent, fitted leather jackets and full, brightly-colored skirts that looked as if they were painted by hand. These garments may not be on prominent display at the MoMA, but they should be admired all the same, as beautiful, highly conceptual pieces that jolt us out of our fashion doldrums.

So Long, Jane
We loved both Jane and its innovative predecessor, Sassy, so very much. That is why we were saddened to hear that is shutting its doorsJane. Both Sassy and Jane inspired a fervent love that many magazine-reading women were eager to profess. To be honest, we were totally in love with Sassy (we saved every issue and would re-read them in bed late at night); it was the first magazine that truly felt like it was "ours." And when Sassy went away, Jane swooped in and did a good job of telling us that it was alright to be a beer and doughnut kind of gal. The authors of the recently published How Sassy Changed My Life contributed a poignant piece to the NY Times that addressed the mag's fate. Truly, there will be a void on the newsstands without Jane - you will be missed.
