Our contributing editor Sidra Durst made it backstage at Jason Wu and
snagged an interview with Gucci Westman, one of the world's most
in-demand makeup artists and the recently-appointed Global Artistic
Director for Revlon. She is responsible for several memorable cover
photos and editorial spreads in magazines like Vogue, W, and Vanity
Fair. Her make-up for spring is very laid back and natural, but with hints of the darker side, especially when it comes to the eyes. Here is what Gucci had to share:
On the idea-generation process: You meet with the designer on the day of the show. If the look doesn't immediately come to you, it's kind of scary. (But usually it does.)
On the look of the show: For this collection, Jason was inspired by Japan, so I went for a Japanese, anime-themed street kid look. I was inspired by all of the kids who are so fashion-forward in Tokyo. For this look, it's all about the eyeliner. [Editor's note: For one look, she layered a lovely shade of peacock (Revlon Matte Eye Shadow in Venetian Blue, available in November) directly over black eyeliner.]
On the big look coming up next season: It's a bit of a grungy and glamorous look -- a distinct combination of a polished girl and a grungy shirt.
On succeeding as a makeup artist: You have to be really bold, but not become too known for any one look -- I love women and I love beauty.
