Friends & Politics

Naturally in an election year the discussion of politics among friends comes up more during gatherings, telephone conversations and emails. It can be a touchy subject leading to at times heated discussions.

I have always had a wide spectrum of friends with various backgrounds and ideologies. The latter might be in agreement or disagreement with my own. But I believe that we can still remain friends despite our differences. Open discussions during a phone conversation or dinner parties for example provide a dialogue. However, at times I receive emails from friends with certain propaganda circulated on the internet. This is often forwarded without comments by the sender, which to me implies a certain amount of endorsement. I feel that anyone who forwards any political opinions, statements, “facts” or data, positive or negative, should research the information and its source prior to sending it to anyone. Plus the sender should add his/her own personal assessment to give context to the recipient.

I feel that we all have a right to our own opinion; but it just an opinion, nothing more. The basic meaning of opinion is “a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty, a personal view, attitude, or appraisal”. Friends should allow one another to express their thoughts, conclusions and judgments, and if done honestly and respectfully it should not be cause for discord.

I wonder how you ladies handle political differences with your friends.

Me too

Funny to hear people don't get these mails.... they do come from the casual friend, not those really close to you. I often laugh because sometimes even "long life" buddies send them along (I know their political affiliations but I think they don't know mine!!!!) Besos y keep up the great entries!

Politicality

It's funny because I don't have many friends with wildly different political opinions. The thing about politics is that we can infer certain things about a person's life philosophy based on what they gravitate towards. And usually an ultra-conservative, anti-choice person and I will have so little in common that we won't be friends for long. I think open debate is fine but I'm not sure how often they really happen.

I almost...

never get those types of emails from my friends/family, I think I'm the only political one in the bunch. What I do hate is the T.V. Campaigning for all these propositions...that's the most annoying thing from me. No on 93,94... Yes on 93,94...anyone who is using T.V. only to cast there votes well I'm not going to say :) I do however get this question 1-2 days after voting "who did you vote for" my response is always " that's private" you can ask/tell me what you want prior to the voting process after that I am off limits :)

i agree

as long as polyphonic and respectable exchange of opinions going on. this year's elections are sure going to be a heated subject matter and i really hope all the heat will bring more people to the voting booths at the end of it all. i might have to tuck my sensitivities away for a while and really buff up my debating skills (a la The Great Debater's style)

I like your attitude

I too have gotten some politically fueled forwards, some which are pretty spiteful and vitriolic. I find myself getting really annoyed, even angered. I need to approch them like you do --that it's just an opinion--or it's going to be a long year.

I agree with you

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but with politics it can get sticky. I prefer to keep my political views to myself and those around me who share in my opinions or friends who are open to both sides. It's the worst to feel judged (or feel like you are judging them) over your respective political opinions.
