Philippe Starck says "Design is Dead"

phil.jpg Genius design icon, Philippe Starck told a German newspaper that he is fed up with his job and plans to resign in two years, which is sad for the rest of us. I had dinner at Philippe's house a few years ago in Paris and I can attest to the fact that he is in fact the genuine article--completely unpretentious and dead serious about his sensitivity to the world. It's amazing we don't see more designers and artists say, "Fu@k it!. I'm done." And although we'll miss Starck's aesthetics, it's a refreshing change from other "artistes" who take their work so seriously. Bravo Philippe!

The Experience Factor

In that same interview the designer also noted "In future there will be no more designers. The designers of the future will be the personal coach, the gym trainer, the diet consultant.”

For today's ME generation, it's all about the personal experience the brand / the object / the consultant / the friend / or anything else in life offers.

Design for design's sake (or quality for quality's sake....) doesn't matter anymore.

If it's ain't real for the consumer it's off their consumer radar and subsequently, off the cash register.
