New Perspective

Today I was scheduled to have dental surgery (3 wisdom teeth removed). I have been anticipating this for a while now and I guess I worked myself up too much. The Dr. decided not to do the surgery because my pressure was too high. I guess I was really nervous and scared. They gave me some medicine to calm me down and it was still high. So he wants me to go to my PCP to see if I have high blood pressure and once I have been cleared I can reschedule my appointment.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE! Ok, yes as an African American and my chances are higher but all I wanted to do is get the procedure over. Being denied a procedure because of my heart really bothered me. I started thinking about my health in a totally different perspective. I'm a mom with a busy job and life and I always put everything first.. but now I need to take care of myself and stop STRESSING! What an eye opener.

Here I come Yoga, Weight Watchers and Dance Revolution!

WOW...

I, too, was denied oral surgery because of my blood pressure, and told to come back in a month after getting my numbers down.  But this wasn't as bad as what happened next.

Two years ago, on Thanksgiving, I ate waaay too much rich food. The result was a painful attack of gout in my left foot. I went to my doctor for the gout, but when the nurse took my bloodpressure, it was way high. The doctor came in and told me that my numbers were too high to be attributed to the gout only. So she began to take my other readings and discovered a myriad of other problems. My sugar numbers were too high, my cholesterol numbers were too high, my blood pressure was too high, my weight was too high, so on and so forth...

When she was through giving me all this wonderful news, she looked at my face (which I'm sure revealed the fact that I now felt like a mountain of cow dung) and said, "You're not coming back, are you?" All I could think was, I came here for my FOOT, dagnabit! Can you give me something for that?!

I have since brought all my numbers down with diet, exercise, and a very low dose blood pressure medication.  Still, I was reluctant to start medication, any medication, because they always tell you that you'll have to take it for the rest of your life (both my parents had hypertension).  But I believe in the healing power of Jesus Christ and prayer, and therefore look forward to the day when medication will no longer be a necessity.

 Take care of yourself.

I have the opposite problem

I'm not saying it to show off, b/c it's annoying.

Apparently mine is so low that sometimes they can't find a pulse... Once I was joining a new gym and the trainer actually made me go get a doctor's note saying it was okay for me to work out before they would let me join.

Maybe you and me could split the difference :)
