Welcome to Manhattan!
Perhaps the most fun city to be in as a 23-year old starting out freshly on her second career in a mere three months time span. That’s right, I had been out of school for only 3 months when I started working at my current job. An opportunity I'd worked hard for during my four years at Virginia Tech faced me and I had to accept the challenge. What do we make of ourselves if we never face adversities and question our abilities, right?
I know for me (despite the opinions of several close friends and family) I never saw myself being a “city” girl. Sure, I like to dress crazily in the latest fobby pieces straight from Europe. I like to be incognito in my large Jackie O. frame sunglasses. And I like the nightlife. But it doesn’t necessarily mean I am built for a city like New York, but why not give it a try?
It all began when I took the plunge and accepted a phenomenal position… ok, not position per say, more like opportunity (afterall I’m only entry level) working for the top PR agency in the world located right in the heart of midtown east.
I've now been in the Big Apple for eight months and am still very much an ameteaur. Each day I step down the dirt ridden steps of the city subway at 86th and Broadway where I ponder the direction I should be headed toward, while always immediately reaching for my bottle of Purell Hand Sanitizer that is stashed in my over-size Burberry tote. Everyone always says the city subway is easier than the DC metro. But to me it was, is, and will always be a puzzle made up of colors, letters and numbers of which I will never be able to piece together. Absolutely no logic. One would think that in combining both alphabet and numbers, there would at least be strategic placement behind it. I mean, how hard would it be to know that 1st comes before 5th and 8th? Or that Broadway comes before Lexington? But no… nothing, not even the streets of this city can be made simple. Instead, the city-doer must learn that 6th Avenue (also known as Avenue of the Americas) comes after Broadway, and that Park Avenue falls between Madison and Lexington in an alphabet of chaos. L, M, N, O, P… if only it was that easy.
But that’s what makes it exciting. You take one wrong turn and you still end up making an entirely new discovery. In fact, the only way to learn is to get lost... and I mean that both literally and figuritivley. The city truley never sleeps and I cannot imagine myself anywhere else at this point in my life.
