Alameda Flea MarketOn my first visit I scored my favorite cocktail ring, thereby starting somewhat of an obsession. Now, I have to go, or I think I’m missing out on a treasure. For those of you that drool over the thought of vintage shopping, you’ll be in heaven once you arrive here and see rows upon rows of sellers peddling their wares (some a lot better than others). I usually get there around 9 AM, but the hardcore shoppers (usually stylists, store owners) arrive around 6 AM! A few pointers: make sure to bring sunscreen and an extra layer as it’s an exposed space with no shelter - I’ve heard so many stories of people leaving looking lobster-ized. Wear comfortable shoes, you walk quite a distance. I always bring a canvas shopper, as your finds will easily pile up. Haggle (people are open to it). If you love it, buy it – as you probably won’t be able to find your way back to the dealer. Go with someone who likes to vintage shop, and has your shopping stamina. Fave finds of mine: vintage Vogues from the 1960s (when it was Diana Vreeland’s baby), countless vintage jewelry (cocktail rings, bangles), purses, and a cool vintage trunk to rest my TV on. Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating MasqueOne of the pains of a long haul flight (along with the dodgy food) is the state of your skin once you step off the plane. I always try to drink gallons of water during the flight, but to no avail – my skin needs something else. I was delighted when a facialist recommended Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Masque. It’s a light gel that can be applied on the down low; slather it on during a flight without alarming fellow passengers (banish the image of a mad woman with a snow white masque and cucumber eyes). Oh, and it gets better. The masque contains loads of the good stuff – antioxidant vitamins to replenish and nourish the skin, and soothing botanical extracts to sooth. It doesn’t leave your skin oily, and can be used on that delicate eye area. Love it! LuLu Lemon Reversible Groove PantI read somewhere that LuLu Lemon’s reversible groove pants are like a bra for the butt. I guarantee that many ladies will attest to this, as these pants have the knack for making virtually all shapes look good. You’ll balk at the price (they do cost significantly more than your average work-out pant), but when you consider their longevity, the investment balances itself out. I bought my first pair almost two and a half years ago, and they’re still going strong (i.e. not sagging and pile free). I love their cut – a flattering straight leg and flat seams (so comfortable to work out in, or just to lounge in). Lulu Lemon always has a great choice of colors, they’re reversible, and the store offers free alterations. |
