    Darlings,

We are delighted to have another guest forecaster this week: up and coming designer Derek Lam whose fashion show at Neiman Marcus Union Square last Friday was a smash success. We predict that Derek is going to blow up this year and that we'll be seeing a lot more of unbelievably gorgeous pieces on the backs of starlets and on the covers of magazines.

Image Guest Forecast by DEREK LAM

What to wear: Carnation print dress
What NOT to wear: Polar Fleece is too hot, try cashmere instead
What to shoe: Bright colored Blahnik pump with a mid-level heel that shows a peep of toe cleavage
What to handbag: No handbag, love just a plain brown lunchbag. Instead I want to create a jacket with long, interior extra pockets
What to hair & makeup: Sexy yet refined
What to read: Helmut Newton's autobiography
What to see: Don't get the movies too often, but The Whitney Biennial is fantastic
What to listen to: Saves the Day, garage rock w/a Beach Boys voice
What to eat: Cloud-like Ricotta Gnocchi
Where to eat it: Zuni Cafe in SF
Where to travel: All over the world
    Color of the Moment: Pomegranate
    Favorite City: New York
Favorite Designer(s): Galanos, Trigiere, Yoji Yamamoto- their lines and technique are amazing

    THE DELIGHTFUL DEREK LAM

Image Amid a bout of anxiety (this often comes in the form of mild perspiration and extreme excitability) we were ultimately relieved to meet the ultra sweet, humble, and brilliant SF native Derek Lam last Friday before his big show at Neiman Marcus. Between growing up in a garment biz family (all of whom were beaming in the front row at the show) and after a long stint at Michael Kors (peppered with intermittent world travel), Derek made the calculated decision to venture out on his own. With his seasoned business savvy and three collections under his belt, Derek truly seems to be hitting his stride. If the raucous red carpet applause was any indication, it's pretty safe to say that he's totally tapped in to what the girls want; nothing too priss or too pat. For Fall he's giving us edgy with a healthy dose of what Lam likes to call "sexy-refinement." Think iconic swans like Carolyn Bessette and Gwyneth P. and then you'll have a good idea of the Derek Lam girl...totally self-confident with an innate sense of understated glamour.

    GETTING THE POINT

Image We are all in support of the right hand ring, heck, we unmarrieds wear our Splendora Superbowl Rings loud and proud. Well, we hear that louche Lopez is still sporting her pink rock, even after she told Us and In Touch that she was returning it. Now it's it on the middle finger of her left hand (a message to Ben?) and she was even seen wearing it on the red carpet at the premiere of faux beau Marc Anthony's new film, Man on Fire. Scandalous.

Speaking of not getting over it, allegedly Fred Segal is banning eye-roller supreme Mischa Barton from its swank environs after she made some disparaging comments about the store. In a very revealing article in a fashion magazine Barton claimed that "Fred Segal is hell. It's high-end generic. It's not made with any love." Bad move Marissss, Freddy is so not one to forgive. No more $895 Marc Jacobs Stella Tote disguised as a school bag? Things just got a little less fashionable in the O.C.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR: Standing Corrected?
We get plenty of emails praising us for being spot on in our Weekend Forecast but every now and then, albeit rare, we get a fashion challenger who disputes our picks (or nitpicking). Usually through a brief diplomatic debate, we enlighten the disputee with our indisputable fashion logic but once in a blue moon, we'll concede. Here are a few of our concessions:

    1. Ugg Boots. We said these were out but our friend Bob, Los Angeles VIP extraordinaire, informed us that they were perfectly chic for men to wear post-surfing or while taking the garbage out at night.

    2. See Through Evening Wear. Once again for dudes, we encourage grinning and baring it. For ladies, leave it in your closet or better yet send it to Posh Spice.

    3. Tankini. Perfectly fine to wear if you haven't yet hit puberty.
